When people think of lockers, their minds typically veer them towards, well, lockers: Small metal boxes used to keep tools, uniforms, and other belongings safe from damage and theft when you are not using them. However, there is another type of locker that is becoming increasingly popular across various industries: wire mesh storage lockers.

Lockers made with wire mesh are often much larger and more customizable than standard metal box lockers. These lockers offer a far more convenient storage solution and come with several benefits that make them better than standard lockers.

Today’s post will highlight some of the advantages of wire mesh lockers to help you understand why they might be the safe and secure storage solution you have been looking for.

Advantages Of Wire Mesh Storage Lockers

Here is a quick rundown of the main benefits of using wire mesh lockers:

1. Secure Storage For Equipment & Tools

Our woven wire mesh lockers offer a safe and secure storage solution for various applications. These lockers are sturdy and support heavier weights, making them ideal for storing valuable and harder-to-operate tools and equipment.

2. Versatile & Customizable Solution

Wire mesh lockers are one of the most versatile storage solutions available. The design of these lockers allows you to add more parts or revamp the layout as needed to better suit your requirements. They give you a more cost-effective solution to add more storage space instead of adding more costly installations as with standard storage lockers.

3. Useful For Greenhouse Or Dispensaries

If you run a medical dispensary or greenhouse growing operation, secure storage can be a major problem. Using standard storage lockers prevents the right amount of light and airflow from getting through to the products you are growing. Wire mesh lockers allow you to enjoy secure storage for the products without compromising on ensuring ideal growing conditions.

4. Convenient Inventory Management

Inventory control becomes easier with wire mesh storage lockers. You get to keep an eye on everything within the locker without opening individual lockers. It also helps you prevent the loss of items by keeping them within sight at all times.

5. Ideal For Residential Storage

Wire mesh lockers also provide a convenient solution for residential storage. Landlords who want to offer discreet but secure storage solutions to their residents can install these lockers easily in the basement of their building. Residents get a space to keep stuff they cannot fit into their apartment units.

Your pallets pose a significant risk for on-site workers. That is why companies must install pallet rack protection to protect workers and equipment from falling. The best type of such protection is those of the wire mesh form since they help catch anything that falls from a pallet.

All in all, they can help transform your facility to become safer and more functional.

1. Prevents Chances of Accidents

Wire mesh pallet rack protectors provide protection by covering the pallets with the wire frame. This leads to fewer chances of spillage and objects falling from the pallets, which could be dangerous for the personnel.

It not only protects objects from falling onto other pallets but also into aisleways, which is why it significantly helps in reducing the chances of accidents.

2. Wear-Resistant

Compared to other alternatives like wood pallet rack protection, wire mesh is much more durable and wear-resistant. Wire mesh pallet rack protection is designed and constructed with galvanized steel, which makes it tough.

As a result, there are fewer chances of wear and tear and fewer chances of forklift causing any damage. This is why this pallet rack protection is considered to be a worthwhile investment.

3. Affordable Solution

Wire mesh pallet rack protection may have a higher upfront cost, but it is important to understand that the cost pays off in the longer term. Unlike other alternatives, such as wood, the wire mesh will not break, corrode, or warp.

Hence, you will not need to replace or repair them as often. You would then be saving a little bit of cost as well.

4. Easy to Install

All wire mesh comes pre-cut and designed with precision according to your dimensions and preferred size, making it relatively easy to install. You won’t need to cut any of the wire yourself or figure out how to install it and where to do it. You simply need to pop in the wire rack and double-check the dimensions.

The installation is simple, straightforward, and not time-consuming at all.

5. Enhance Warehouse Safety

All in all, wire mesh pallet rack protection enhances your warehouse safety by protecting personnel, stored objects, and your assets. This mitigates any chances of incidents that can be dangerous and costly for your business.

While wire mesh pallet rack protection is excellent for warehouse safety, it is still vital that you train your employees. This will enhance safety while also helping the wire mesh last much longer.

Our handcrafted, high-quality mesh at Calwire is designed with precision through advanced technology and software.

Woven wire mesh and welded wire mesh are popular design materials used in commercial and industrial applications due to their structural integrity and unique aesthetic qualities. However, to properly utilize them, you must first understand their differences to get optimal value in terms of safety, regulation compliance, and design.

What Is Woven Wire Mesh?

Woven wire mesh is a series of metal (aluminum, steel, stainless steel, etc.) wires interlaced or interlocked together to form a metal wire cloth with a specific weave pattern, wire diameter, opening (aperture ) size, and length/width.

Applications

Woven wire mesh is typically used in filtration and separation equipment. Popular applications include:

Security mesh to protect windows

Stairwells and walkways

Ventilation

Machine guards

Railings

Decorative screening

Secure partitions, etc.

What is Welded Wire Mesh?

Welded wire mesh, in contrast, is best described as a predetermined number of metal wires welded at the cross-sections using different welding techniques, resulting in more permanent opening size and durable design that’s virtually impossible to compromise.

Applications

Like woven wire mesh, welded wire mesh serves a host of commercial and industrial applications, such as:

Infill panels

Protective free form encasings

Security fences and cages

Stairways and balustrading

Catwalks

Largescale construction projects, etc.

Woven Wire Mesh vs. Welded Wire Mesh – Which One’s Right For You?

The application will determine which structure will be more suitable for your use case as with all mesh wire solutions. For instance, if you’re looking for a more sturdy, corrosion-free, durable mesh for heavy-duty applications, welded wire mesh will be a good fit. Suppose you’re looking for a cost-effective material with small openings, especially for filtration purposes. In that case, woven wire mesh is the right option for you. Since it’s predominantly made with stainless steel, it is more resistant to corrosive materials, such as acids and alkaline solutions. As far as the cost is concerned, welded wire mesh easily takes the cake since its production is a lot more hands-on and time/labor-intensive.

Since 1948, California Wire Products (Cal-Wire) has been manufacturing top-notch wire meshes for the commercial and industrial sectors all across the country.
Welded wire mesh is a pre-fabricated grid made of stainless steel or low carbon wires, as the name implies. Flattening and soldering together high-quality carbon stainless steel wires creates the design. It is extensively used today due to its high production rate, simple design, and ease of transportation.

The welded wire mesh materials are welded properly at each contact, resulting in a consistent and long-lasting structure suited for a wide range of applications.

For example, wire mesh panels made from steel are available in standard-sized panels for modular deployment configurations. They offer protection and security in a range of applications in warehouse, factory, and distribution activities. The panels can be used to create a free-standing structure by bolting posts into the flooring, or they can be connected to existing structures like pallet racks. However, security and protection are not the only applications of wire mesh panels. The different types of wire mesh panels—galvanized, plain steel, stainless steel, and copper—can be used for other applications as well. The following are some key applications of the different types of wire mesh panels.

1. Securing the Area Around Automated Equipment and Machinery

Steel mesh panels and poles can be used to create a fence around automated devices, like robotic arms or other automated equipment, to keep people out of the way.

2. Preventing Theft of Inventory

Free-standing cages built from steel mesh panels and poles with limited access through a man-door built of the same materials can be used to store high-value goods. Alternatively, fixed wire mesh panels can be attached to the rack rails and support on the rear, sides, and front of industrial steel pallet rack bays. Access is usually via a sliding panel (in tight aisle applications) or one that opens out into the aisle (aisles of standard width).

3. As Dividers

Maintaining adequate separation between machining applications in industries where machines are frequently employed around the clock to perform complicated operations is critical.Industries and businesses are using welded wire mesh panels to divide tiny sections of machining and client rooms.Welded Wire Mesh Panels are known for their great durability and flexibility, so they can simply be moved in and out of spaces based on the specific needs of the day’s workspace.

4. Creating an Upscale Look in High-End Restaurants or Residences

Metal and alloy Wire Mesh Panels are often used to give an upscale effect, especially in high-
end restaurants and residences.

As seen above, the different types of wire mesh panels can be used for a range of applications.

At Cal-Wire, we allow easy implementation of these applications by providing the highest quality
wire mesh fabrication services. For clients all over the world, we can fabricate and design high-
quality stainless steel wire mesh products. You can get more information by getting in touch with

There is no place for compromise when it comes to your workers' safety and well-being. And,
when it comes to preventable recordable injuries, all that can be done should be done.
While there is a lot to take care of in your facility, pallet rack protection should be a top priority
for anybody who works with or around pallet racks. The continuous movement of people,
products, and equipment in warehouses creates the ideal atmosphere for damage and
accidents to get overlooked.

However, the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 mandates companies to provide
employees with a workplace free of known risks.
While OSHA continues to encourage businesses and employees to minimize occupational risks,
it does not provide clear guidelines when it comes to pallet rack protection and damage. As a
result, businesses and warehouse managers need to recognize the dangers of pallet racking
and take proactive measures to avoid it.
The following is how pallet rack protection can help businesses and warehouses to prevent
accidents at work.

1. Proper Aisle Spacing

To avoid needless interaction and impact, a proper rack layout is essential. Pallet racking
protectors provide optimum rack spacing based on your facility's size, inventory load, forklift
turning radius, and other variables.

2. Industrial Guard Rails

Industrial guard rails are a type of barrier that may be put around mezzanines, pallet racks,
heavy equipment, and other similar structures to prevent forklifts or other machinery from
colliding with them. It is one of the key benefits of pallet racking protectors in a warehouse.
When driving huge motorized trucks with little visibility in front of you, it is easy to inadvertently
run into a column of pallet rack. Even the tiniest collision can destroy expensive machinery or,
worse, cause a pallet rack to collapse, injuring everyone in sight.
These guard rails are also available as End of Aisle rack protection to safeguard interior walls
when storing merchandise or mounting pallets before shipping.

3. Double Post Design

The double post design is a great example of enhanced safety with pallet racking protectors’
applications. The impact protection of the bottom section of the column is effectively doubled
with the design of the double post. They are also known as reinforced or "boxed" columns.

4. Column Post Protectors

These post guards protect rack uprights against forklift damage, extending the life of your rack
while also safeguarding your stock and, most importantly, your workers.

5. Bollards

Because they are physical obstacles, bollards are always useful and considerably more
impactful than signs or warning lights. Although drivers may be tempted to disregard or defy
other indications, they will not attempt to move around, through, or over a bollard because they
are aware of the inherent physical hazards and the possibility of significant injury to themselves
or their vehicles.

Pallet racking protectors, when used in tandem with safety best practices, can substantially
improve warehouse safety in a short period.

At Cal-Wire, our pallet racking protectors can help you save money on maintenance while
protecting your workers. We have decades of experience developing and manufacturing high-
quality protectors and can advise you on which type is ideal for your operation. With us, the
safety of your workers and inventory is assured.

Perhaps we’re biased, but we strongly believe American-made metal products are simply better. Here’s why.

Three Reasons You Want Custom Wire Mesh Made in America

1. High-quality materials

One of the biggest hazards with ordering metal products from overseas is that you have almost no way of evaluating their material quality or guaranteeing that quality across multiple batches. A lot of the cheap foreign outfits are using ‘dirty’ steel with contaminants or substandard raw materials. They also tend to have very poor QC policies, sourcing their metals and raw materials based solely on what’s cheapest at the moment.

American-made metal products are much more likely to be of consistent quality, coming from supply lines which are carefully vetted and overseen.

2. Consumer protection laws

So, let’s say you order a batch of wire mesh from overseas, but it turns out to be brittle and useless. What recourse do you have? From a practical standpoint, you have none. Trying to sue a foreign company for selling bad products is almost always an exercise in futility. It’s too costly even in the best of cases, and most of the time, their home country will have a legal system that’s openly hostile to overseas lawsuits.

However, when you buy American, you get all the protections of the American legal system. If you end up with a bum product, you have options to rectify the situation.

3. Faster and cheaper shipping

Even when talking about price, buying American isn’t as “expensive” as some believe because they’re overlooking the costs of shipping from overseas. The shipping itself is expensive, plus it often takes weeks – or months – and that means opportunity costs as well. With American-made products, you can have them shipped out rapidly and arrive when you need them.

Stainless steel is one of the greatest metal products ever made. It’s relatively lightweight, strong yet easy to work with, and the chromium content gives it a higher level of corrosion resistance than in other iron-based alloys. However, the process of changing iron into stainless-steel wire mesh is not a simple one! A lot goes into that bit of wire you’re buying.

Stainless-Steel Wire Mesh – How Is It Produced

Stainless steel starts as iron, carbon, chromium, and usually some trace materials such as nickel or manganese. These are melted together in an electric arc furnace, often taking 12+ hours of intense heat to fuse them into a single alloy.

Afterward, there will be significant carbon buildup, and the excess needs to be removed. This is done through Argon Oxygen Decarburization, a process where an oxygen-argon mixture is injected into the raw alloy. It binds with and removes the carbon. Extra alloying elements can be added at this time if desired.

This mixture will then be stirred for a necessary period to further improve consistency and ensure the chemical composition is correct.

Once the chemical properties are in place, the steel is formed into a basic shape. For creating wire, it’s converted into either round or square billets. These are then re-heated and sent through a hot rolling process. For creating mesh, these rollers turn the steel into wire. Stainless-steel has excellent ductility and can maintain its strength even when rolled into extremely thin wires. This is one of the reasons it’s an excellent material for creating wire mesh!

During the rolling process, it may be necessary to anneal the steel. This means heating and cooling the steel under controlled conditions, to relieve any internal stresses within the metal – preventing it from becoming brittle in its final form.

However, the annealing process also causes scale to form on the outer surface of the steel, and this must be removed before final processing. This is accomplished with a bath in nitric-hydrofluoric acid or, occasionally, electro cleaning. Either way, once the steel is de-scaled, the process is effectively over. The stainless steel is created and can be shaped or rolled into its final form.

Then, it’s just a matter of weaving the wire to create stainless steel wire mesh.

If you need wire mesh for fencing or containment purposes, you have a lot of choices in finding the perfect mesh for your needs. One of the most important decisions to make is what type of metal will be used. Most of the time, you’ll be looking at either carbon steel or stainless-steel wire mesh.

What’s the difference? It boils down to the differences between carbon steel and stainless steel. Here’s a quick breakdown.

Understanding the Differences Between Carbon Steel & Stainless-Steel Wire Mesh

From a physical standpoint, the two products are quite similar. Steel is, of course, primarily an alloy of iron and carbon. Stainless steel also includes chromium, whereas carbon steel has an overall higher percentage of carbon in its makeup. This leads to several major differences.

1. Corrosion Resistance

The purpose of the chromium in stainless steel is to increase its resistance to corrosion. The iron in steel will always be susceptible to oxidation – rusting – but the chromium creates an outer layer that helps capture oxygen before it reaches the iron. This turns into a layer of chromium oxide, which is harmless.

Carbon steel has very little resistance to rust, so it needs to either be kept out of the elements or independently coated in something to add resistance.

2. Strength

Discussing the tensile strength of these products is a bit tricky because there are many different grades available. As a broad generalization, stainless steel tends to be a bit softer and easier to work with than carbon steel, while carbon steel tends to be stronger. Stainless steel is also generally more ductile than carbon steel, so it’s easier to spin stainless steel into thinner wires for meshes.

So, you’re more likely to see large-gauge carbon steel mesh, and smaller-gauge stainless steel wire mesh.

3. Appearance

Stainless steel is usually considered to be the more attractive of the two options, with a pleasing metallic shine. Also, it can be scratched without losing its luster – or its corrosion protection. Carbon steel is more commonly used in applications where it’s out of view, and it shows damage more easily as well.

Custom wire mesh panels can be the perfect solution for a wide range of fencing and containment needs. From protecting pallet racks to keeping animals in their pen, wire mesh panels offer an excellent balance of price vs. performance. Plus, they require extremely little upkeep, while lasting for years or even decades.

However, you do have a lot of options in wire mesh panels and getting the best value for money means thinking about which type of panel will be the best fit for your needs. These are some of the most important considerations.

Four Things to Consider When You Buy Custom Wire Mesh Panels

1. Wire gauge

This simply refers to the thickness of the wires that make up your wire mesh. This primarily affects their strength, although it’s not quite as straightforward as “thicker = stronger.” You’ll also want to consider how much the mesh is likely to bend because thicker gauges will be more resistant to bending.

In addition, prices tend to go up along with the gauge, as more metal is being used.

2. Weave size

Another important consideration is the weave size, the size of the holes within the mesh. The smaller the weave, the more “solid” the mesh becomes. Larger weaves make it easy to see through the fence (good for keeping track of items or livestock) but it will be potentially climbable.

3. Weave type

The other major concern with weave is whether you want a square weave or diamond weave. This is mostly just a question of which look you prefer, although square weaves may be a little easier to climb.

4. Rolls or panels?

You can generally get your mesh in two ways, either as independent panels or as large rolls of mesh. Panels are easy to work with and install but will become increasingly expensive the more you order. Rolls will be cheaper for larger square-footage but require more effort to work with. Rolls are generally best for fencing off large areas; panels are generally for more contained applications such as guarding pallet racks.

Baskets are a vital, although often overlooked, part of most warehouse and shipping operations. They need to be chosen carefully if you are to receive the best returns on your investment. Considerations such as size, weight, and durability are all crucial – and most can be controlled most easily through the choice of basket material.

While some operations utilize sheet metal for their baskets, in most cases custom wire mesh is the better option. Here’s why.

Five Reasons to Choose Custom Wire Mesh Builds for Your Warehouse Baskets

1. Lower costs

Less material means lower costs. So why construct your baskets out of solid metal when a wire mesh can do the exact same job, while only using a small fraction of the material? Even with the need to do extra construction work on the wire mesh, it’s much less expensive than working with sheet metal.

2. Weight

Likewise, less material usage means lower weight. This translates to wire mesh requiring less energy to move around or allowing you to move heavier products. Either way, it adds up to more cost savings compared to using solid metal baskets.

Also, you’ll be putting less strain on the mechanisms used to move the baskets around, creating more savings via lowered maintenance costs.

3. Better product visibility

Does your facility have any concerns with “loss” or products otherwise mysteriously going missing? This will be a lot more common with fully enclosed baskets, where you can’t see the contents. Custom wire mesh ensures the contents are always visible to managers and overseers, and missing product will be spotted much more quickly.

4. Better airflow/drainage

While not always the case, most of the time, you’re likely to want your products to be able to easily drain out if they’re ever exposed to water or other liquids. The design of wire mesh makes this simple.

5. Safer usage

Generally speaking, wire mesh baskets are safer to work with because they’re less likely to have sharp edges or jagged spots. Sheet metal can easily have burrs and other hazards that can catch on clothes – or skin. Wire mesh will usually keep your workers a bit safer.

Does this mean solid metal baskets are always a bad idea? Of course not. They will be somewhat stronger than wire mesh, and there may be situations where you want a product completely protected from the elements. Still, except for these specialty cases, custom wire mesh baskets will be a better option more often than not.
